Two people have had a significant impact on my career, my Nana and Bennie Tognini, hairdresser extrodinaire.
Growing up on a cane farm in North Queensland, I was fortunate to have my Nana live down the road from me as it was she who nutured my creativity from a young age. Nana could do anything she turned her hands to, self taught too mind you, and she patiently shared those skills. (Sorry nan, I've forgotten how to knit and crochet!) She instilled my love of creating beautiful things.
I met Bennie when I moved to Brisbane as a second year hairdressing apprentice, as Tognini's Hair workshop was the place to work. I made it my mission to be apart of his team. The diversity of creativity that was encouraged in this enviroment was incredible and as well producing multi award winning hairstylists, Bennie gained a reputation as an avante-guarde stylist. He created elaborate headpieces that Alexander McQueen would be proud to have on his runway and it was as his apprentice that I learnt valuable design skills - line, form, proportion, balance- skills I believe have influenced my style and makes my work what it is.
It was also at Tognini's that I developed my makeup skills under the guidance of the exceptionally talented Tracey Tognini, also a self taught makeup artist. Leaving the nest after 6 incredible years I then forged a successful career as a freelance hair and makeup artist specializing in fashion and photographic work.
It was a spontaneous move to melbourne and a photo shoot with Rhonda Burchmore that lead me into Millinery. We met on a shoot and I was asked to create a piece for her, I did and it was a media hit and I experienced fashions on the field as a guest for the first time. There I was, at the home of such an iconic Australian event, and I thought "I love this! I had better go and learn how to make hats properly" That was in 1998 and I'm still learning along the way.
People often ask "what do you like best - millinery, hair or makeup?" I love creating and I love to make people feel amazing so I can't choose! I have now added Emcee to my bio and also teach makeup at the Academy of Make-up, roles I also enjoy very much. As my profile grows (see latest press release) I am grateful for the opportunities that arise and for the people i meet however it is my clients both new and regular that I cherish. So make an appointment, come and play dress ups or be made up, browse my online shop and be prepared to look fabulous!
Keep smiling
